Rail Upgrade ‘Threat to Culture Year’

PLANS to close the west coast main line for Bank Holiday engineering work will do significant damage to Capital of Culture year, it was feared today.

Liverpool Chamber of Commerce has called on Network Rail to reconsider its plans, and culture officials described the situation as frustrating.

The work will mean that travellers between London and Liverpool will have to use a bus replacement service between Northampton and Birmingham as Rugby station is closed.

The work could stretch to a week on either side of the August Bank Holiday.

Need A Ticket To Ride?

TransPennine Express has published a microsite to celebrate Liverpool’s year as the Capital of Culture. It offers advice on a whole loads of things to do whilst visiting the city as well places to stay at if you think one day is not enough for you. I guess the main point of the microsite is to promote the train fares to Liverpool, which is fair enough. If you live in or near Leeds, Sheffield, York or Newcastle or you may well be interested to know that the fare to Liverpool is as follows:

• Leeds to Liverpool = £8 (single)
• Sheffield to Liverpool = £8 (single)
• York to Liverpool = £11 (single)
• Newcastle to Liverpool = £18 (single)

Parking in Liverpool (and any major city) can be very expensive these days so taking a train could be a viable alternative. Train travel can certainly take the stress out of navigating your way around a city centre that you do not know and remember, if you don’t drive in, you don’t have to drive home, which means you have have a bevvy in one of Liverpool’s many watering holes.
