European Youth Orchestra at the Philharmonic
Posted by Stephen
The European Youth Orchestra performed at the Philharmonic recently, it was the final date of its spring 2008 tour.
The packaging of the European Union Youth Orchestra’s concerts can be a little off-putting. There’s the phalanx of flags; the ladies’ logo- twinkling blue stoles; the programme’s printed messages from at least five EU bureaucrats. Are these young people musicians or political puppets?
Then the orchestra starts to play, and grouses disappear. This Liverpool concert was the last in the current players’ spring tour with their music director Vladmir Ashkenazy, a septuagenarian so spry that he can jump off the podium with both feet even after conducting 40 minutes of heavyweight Strauss.

Review - RLPO/Jenkins at Liverpool Cathedral
Posted by Stephen
One of the more unlikely Mersey sounds to emerge from Liverpool in its year as European Capital of Culture is a stream of very earnest, very mystical new choral pieces. John Tavener’s Requiem has already come and gone in a whirl of multi-faith chanting. Paul McCartney’s Ecce Cor Meum, a lament for Linda, arrives in his home city in May. And on Saturday Liverpool’s vast Anglican cathedral was packed - some achievement - for the premiere of Karl Jenkins’s Stabat Mater.
